Puerto Mosquito Bay on Vieques is one of a handful of bioluminescent bays in the world. Microscopic organisms known as Dinoflagellates glow whenever there is movement in the water, a phenomena that best appreciated in the dark.

When the Gatun Dam was built across the Chagres River more than a century ago, it created Gatun Lake close to the Atlantic port city of Colon.
