Avignon and Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

Spend the day in and around Avignon, the seat of the Holy See between 1309 and 1377 and a city that remained under papal control until the French Revolution. This excursion begins with a scenic drive to the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, just north of Avignon, an area that is one of France’s most venerable grape-growing regions. The name comes from the popes’ summer residence and some vines in the surrounding vineyards date to the papal era. The winery of Chateau des Fines-Roches is your destination for an introduction to winemaking according France’s strict rules of appellation, and a tasting of the full-bodied red wines for which this viticulture area is known. From the countryside, you’ll be transported to Avignon’s delightful historic center for free time and lunch on your own at one of the many cafes and restaurants found on and around the Place de L’Horloge, the bustling main square. Rejoin your guide for a walking tour of the streets lined with heritage architecture, following a route that leads up to the entrance of the fortified Palais des Papes – the Popes’ Palace. Overlooking the city and Rhone River from a hilltop, it is the largest Gothic complex in Europe, its scale and grandeur reflecting ecclesiastical power and ambitions in the Middle Ages. Your guide will highlight key as you stroll through the ceremonial halls, courtroom, private apartments and the chapels adorned with magnificent frescoes. Next to the Palais is the city cathedral, Notre-Dame des Doms, which predates the Palais by 200 years. After the walking tour, meet your driver for the return to the yacht.
