Calvi Historic Walking Tour

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

On this excursion through the medieval port town of Calvi in the Balagne region of northwest Corsica, you will walk along narrow lanes and ancient ramparts as you follow your guide to the entrance of the towering citadel overlooking the port. At this 15th-century military outpost, stop to take in the vista of red roofs and luxury yachts below. Continue to the town square of Place d'Armes and then to Calvi Cathedral at the promontory's highest point. Founded in the 13th century and partially destroyed during the Turkish siege in 1553, the cathedral was rebuilt in the form of the Greek cross. You will then behold the fabled ruins of what is believed to have been the home of Calvi's most famous resident, Christopher Columbus. Passing Caserne Sampiero, the restored palace of the Genoese governor, enjoy some time for photos before heading back down to the port.
