Historic Bonifacio Walking Tour

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

Board Bonifacio’s little train to travel comfortably from the pier up the steep cliffs to the medieval citadel. Pass through the historic Bosco Quarter, including an eerie marine cemetery filled with mausoleums in a jumble of architectural styles, as well as a rare example of Corsican Gothic architecture at Église Saint-Dominique de Bonifacio. As you arrive at the clifftop citadel, you will have marvelous views of the Strait of Bonifacio and as far as Sardinia on a clear day. Embark on a guided walking tour through narrow streets and alleyways lined with medieval townhouses, shops and cafés, and marvel at the Romanesque architecture of the imposing Église Sainte-Marie-Majeure. You’ll find yourself in the heart of the historic city on Rue des Deux Emperors, or Two Emperors Street, where Napoleon and Charles V both lodged, centuries apart. Pass through Porte de Gênes, once the only entrance through the walls of the citadel and take in splendid views from Chapelle Saint-Roch of the white limestone cliffs lining the coast.
