Achillion Palace and Panoramic Corfu

Submitted by carmine.nezi on

Begin your exploration of the idyllic island of Corfu with a visit to the village of Lakones for a view of traditional Greek life and lovely vistas of the bay of Paleokastritsa. Then travel inland through colorful citrus groves to the Achillion Palace, a neoclassical villa built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria in 1890. The marvelous palace reflects Elisabeth's fascination with Greek mythology and in particular her admiration of Achilles, who is represented in paintings and sculptures throughout the home and beautifully landscaped grounds. Later used as a summer retreat by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the villa is today a museum that gives you a glimpse of the privileged lifestyle of European rulers. You will then depart for the historic Old Town of Corfu for a guided walk through the esplanade, arcaded terraces and cafés of the French-designed main square, as well as Saint Spyridon Church and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George.
