Panama Canal and City

Panamanian history and heritage are yours to discover in the country’s capital and at the famous canal. You’ll travel first to Fort Amador, built to protect the canal’s western, Pacific side. To reach the fort, you’ll ride over the long, palm-lined causeway – also once part of a U.S. military base -- that offers spectacular views of Panama City’s modern skyline. Then it’s on to the heart of the capital, the colonial center known as Casco Viejo. Your guide will point out churches, convents, mansion and other historic buildings, highlighting the blend of French, Spanish and Italian architectural influences. Enjoy lunch at Saquella Restaurant and free time to stroll its narrow streets before visiting one of the modern world’s engineering marvels. At the Miraflores Locks Visitors Center, learn about the design and construction of the canal, its impact on global shipping and commerce, and the rich biodiversity of the surrounding area. From one of the center’s terraces and observation decks, watch massive ships up close as they make their way through the canal.
