Authentic Embera Indigenous Village

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

With the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, the Embera people began to migrate from their traditional homeland in Colombia’s Choco region to the rainforests and waterways of the Panamanian isthmus. Discover how they have maintained their longstanding traditions over the centuries on a visit to one of their villages. This cultural exploration begins with a drive from the coast, through the jungle and into Chagres National Park. Along the way, your guide will share Panamanian history and discuss Embera culture. For the last leg of the journey, you’ll board a motor-powered dugout canoe to travel the river while keeping watch for wildlife along the banks and in the rainforest. When you arrive, the Chief greets you and the residents perform a series of traditional dances. Afterwards, you can enjoy a special meal cooked by the Embera Tribe and are free to walk around and talk to the villagers, who are welcoming but quiet and reserved. Authentic locally-made handicrafts are for sale, the proceeds of which benefit the community.
