Overland - Mayan Immersion and Kukulkan Nights

Explore an ancient city, colonial heritage and Maya traditions on this overnight tour on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Travel from the port town of Progreso some 150 kilometers inland to the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, once the most important Maya city and ceremonial center on the peninsula.

Your arrival is timed to coincide with a purification rite performed by a modern Maya shaman. You’ll then check in and relax over a welcome cocktail at Mayaland, a family-owned hotel with lush tropical gardens established inside the archaeological park in 1923. 

It’s a short walk from the hotel property to your seats for “Nights of Kukulkan,” a light and sound spectacle, and a special presentation on the landmark Pyramid of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo (the Castle), famous for its astronomically-aligned features. After the show, enjoy a buffet dinner at the hotel restaurant featuring flavorful Yucatan specialties, fresh salads, side dishes and desserts.

The following morning, earlier risers will be able to watch the sun come up over the ruins. The day officially begins with a guided tour in the cooler hours before the park officially opens. As you stroll the expansive site, your local guide will explain the history and the iconography of such structures as the Temple of the Warriors, the ball court and the circular observatory called El Caracol (the snail). Recharge over a typical hearty Mexican breakfast at the hotel.

This Yucatan exploration then continues in Valladolid, a small city whose tidy, quiet streets are lined with pastel-hued colonial buildings. You’ll visit the cathedral initially built by conquering Spanish with the stones from a Maya pyramid, followed by time at the Casa de los Venados, a private home and museum. The owners spent a decade renovating the mansion and have filled with their collection – some 3,000 pieces – of Mexican folk art. After lunch at a local restaurant, you’ll return to Progreso to rejoin the yacht.
