Explore one of the largest slavery memorials in the world, the amazing Memorial ACTe Museum, a must-see for anyone interested in the history of Guadeloupe and the Caribbean. Sitting at the mouth of Pointe-a-Pitre’s bay, the “Caribbean Center for the expressions of the memory of the Slave Trade” was inaugurated on May 10, 2015 by the French President, M. François Hollande. It was designed by the Guadeloupe architectural group Berthelot/Mocka-Célestine (their concept of ’silver roots on a black box’ was selected in 2008 from 27 international proposals). The symbolic black facade represents the millions of victims of slavery, and it contains a permanent exhibition that illustrates the history of slavery through hundreds of documents and displays. The building graces the site of the former Darboussier sugar refinery that processed cane from slave plantations. With your guide, you’ll visit the permanent exhibition as well as the temporary exhibit of Caribbean artists.
